Why so much emphasis on energy provision. Surely we need the emphasis to be on energy CONSERVATION? We need energy where needed and when needed and no more than that. We turn off unnecessary lights, we insulate to prevent energy loss, we charge our EVs at night without lighting the bums of birds and airplanes. Simply conservation common sense and no more!

Graham,
Yes we need massive energy conservation AND the residual power to be completley DECARBONISED.
The UK faces a power crisis in 2015 when demand for energy could outstrip supply especially as most of our present fleet of Nuclear and coal plants are shut down due to age and pollution.
We have a massive once in alifetime opportunity to replace our closing inefficeint monstrous, imported power plants and replace them with decentralised ,indigenous, renewable energy and CHP systems.

I side with Graham...

THERE IS JUST NO NEED TO LIGHT THE UNDERSIDES OF CLOUDS,BIRDS AND AIRPLANES.

yes2renewables please learn something about LIGHT POLLUTION!

Dear Graham, many people claim they can not reduce any more of their energy uses, they have energy efficient houses and transport, they conserve every which way, but it takes a huge amount of energy to accelerate a train up to running speed and then again after the next station, despite it is 10 times more efficient than the same number of people in their own individual vehicles, where does that energy come from ? - Currently, burning fossil fuels, so that is why improvements in wind energy that keep those fossil fuels in the ground, rather than throw them into the atmosphere, are worthy of praise.
With non-carbon energy production it doesn't matter if the odd bird has light to guide it home, at least it can breathe.
Wind turbines are light pollution, not Heavy pollution as you get by using coal fired power.
Regards. Geoff Thomas.

-- Graham, Because the way we are creating energy is wrong. It will run out in time and is slowly ruining the planet. Its that simple.

I agree with some points made by everybody but surely we should be looking at long term solutions that will gradually phase out old style power production. Turning off your lights will only use less dirty power that has been stored. Surely we should keep our lights on when we want and at least fall back on stored energy from renewable sources. The Sun keeps it's lights on all of time so why can't we? Simples.
