CH Energy invests in wind farm, seeks state's OK for 'solar tier'

Renewable energy is much in the vision of CH Energy Group and its two subsidiaries, both the regulated one and the nonregulated one

CH Shirley Wind LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of the nonregulated unit, Central Hudson Energy Services (CHEC), announced plans Tuesday to invest about $50 million in a wind farm in Glenmore, Wis.

Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp., the regulated subsidiary of CH Energy Group, announced a position statement favoring a change that would let it build solar projects within its own mid-Hudson service territory.

Both company announcements Tuesday show the Poughkeepsie-based utility's interest in renewable or sustainable energy production. Most of the power sent out to customers now is produced by fossil-fuel burning or nuclear plants. But the CHEC subsidiary's production is entirely in renewables.

The wind unit will buy a 90 percent interest in the 20-megawatt Shirley project, which has a 20-year power-purchase agreement with Wisconsin Public Service Corp. for the output of the planned eight wind turbines.
