ServusNet intelligence to Wind Farm

Irish software company, ServusNet, is using Nokia Siemens Networks to help provide its management solution for wind farms

The operations and maintenance system aims to help wind farm operators boost productivity while simplifying the delivery of energy onto power grids. ServusNet is currently trialing the solution with a customer. A ServusNet customer may have multiple wind farms distributed across Europe, with each farm made up of tens to hundreds of turbines. As energy markets evolve, these renewable energy operators face increased competition for contracts to supply national or regional grids. As part of their service level agreements they must guarantee both their levels of supply and energy price. Using Nokia Siemens Networks Open Element Management System (EMS) Suite, ServusNet is able to improve wind farm energy productivity and predictability of supply, while optimizing its delivery. "We required a system that would help us rapidly introduce new, value-added applications as well as being able to extract data from different turbine vendors for a single, unified view of all wind farm elements," said Des Farren, chief executive officer, ServusNet. "Nokia Siemens Networks Open EMS Suite not only solved both problems but thanks to its flexibility and scale it will also help us to move into new areas, such as solar power." The Open EMS Suite is part of the Nokia Siemens Networks offering for the energy sector. Its flexible multi-technology, multi-vendor integration framework for third-party applications makes it an ideal software platform for the energy market where third-party applications need to be integrated on top of a common resource model and interaction capability with both legacy and new technologies is required. "The fact that renewable forms of energy generation, such as wind, solar and wave power, can use tested and trusted IT solutions instead of having to develop software from scratch, speeds up development, reduces total cost of ownership and maximizes revenues," said Mika Suomela, head of energy initiatives, Nokia Siemens Networks.
